Steering Girls Toward STEAM Fields

GEMS World Academy Chicago recently hosted a special “Girls In STEAM” event designed to encourage female students to consider career paths in science, technology, engineering, art & design or math. The event, organized by the GEMS Parent Teacher Organization with help from school faculty and staff, featured a series of hands-on STEAM workshops, followed by an in-depth panel discussion. More than 50 girls participated, along with about 25 parents.

The professionals who helped lead the workshops and panel discussions came from organizations like Bit Space, 50Action50, Black Women in Science and Engineering, We Design Think and others. For more about this event, read our news item here.
Why We Teach the Craft of Writing

WritingWorkshop.jpg
GEMS uses the "workshop" method, developed at Columbia University, to teach
writing and editing skills

At a time when so much information is shared via video content, hashtags or 140-character posts, it might seem that schools should devote less time to the teaching of writing. Educators and researchers say, though, that the teaching of writing is as relevant and important as ever, even in today's digital world. One of the key reasons cited is that writing remains very much in demand as a skill, both in college and in the workplace beyond. Read more on our blog here.
